Stop Comparing and Start Sharing: Why Your Story Matters

Let’s get real for a second. How many times have you hesitated to post something because you thought, “It’s not that exciting” or “Who would care?”

Or maybe you’ve typed up a story and then deleted it because it didn’t feel as “Instagram-worthy” as what someone else had posted.

You’re not alone. We’ve all been there. (I know I have!)

But here’s the thing — your story matters.

Yep, even if it’s not glamorous, even if it’s messy, even if it’s “boring.”

The most powerful content often comes from real-life moments. The magic happens when you share your truth . . . no matter how it stacks up against anyone else’s.

Take, for example, a conversation I recently witnessed in a group of mom entrepreneurs.

One mom shared that she once took a work call from the back staircase of a Macy’s. She had been in the middle of trying on clothes when she suddenly realized she had completely forgotten about a scheduled call. Cue the frantic rush to get dressed and find a quiet spot to take the call.

Another (yours, truly) took a call on the side staircase of the local library while my son played on a nearby playground. I needed to be close enough to keep an eye on him but far enough away that my client wouldn’t hear the joyful chaos of kids screaming and laughing in the background.

A third initially held back, thinking her own stories of taking calls from closets or bathrooms weren’t thrilling enough to share. But after being reminded that this wasn’t a competition, she opened up — and what she shared was so relatable!

She talked about how she strategically hides around the house during meetings in places her kids won’t think to look for her. Because let’s be real — sometimes work calls require a game of hide-and-seek. (Or should we say, hide-and-work?)

And that led to even more connection. I chimed in, sharing how I’ve definitely hidden from my kid before — not just for meetings, but also when I didn’t want to share my snacks. I’ve hidden in my car, the bathroom, and even a room we use for storage just to steal a moment of quiet (and chocolate chomping). 🤣

That’s the power of sharing. When we put our stories out there, we invite others to say, “Me too!” We create connections where there once was silence. We remind each other that we’re not alone.

So, the next time you find yourself comparing your story to someone else’s “highlight reel”, take a breath.

Remind yourself that what you have to share is enough. Your audience doesn’t need perfection — they need authenticity. They need you.

And if you ever start to censor yourself because your story doesn’t feel exciting enough, remember this: If you don’t share it, we won’t know what we might have in common. And that’s a loss for all of us.

Here’s your gentle nudge to stop competing and start sharing. Your voice matters, and there’s someone out there who needs to hear what only you can say.
