The Power of Unexpected Twists: How Your Unique Path Shapes Your Success

My son turned 13 this month and it has me thinking about his future . . . and my own journey. 

We’re taught that your life path should look something like this: Graduate from high school > Go to college ( and maybe grad school) > Get a job in your field. 

But, in reality, things don’t always move in a straight line. 

In fact, most of us have at least a little bit of a zig or a zag in our path. Some of us have all kinds of loop de loops. 

My journey was more like the latter. 

I went to college planning on majoring in Theater Arts, but then I fell in love with Sociology and Psychology. 5 years later, I graduated with a double major, took a year off, and then went on to grad school. Yet again, I started out with one major (Counseling Psychology), but graduated with another (Educational Psychology). 

Then I graduated and what did I do with my 3 degrees? 

Nothing that was expected!

 I worked for a few years as a live-in nanny (yes, like Mary Poppins). Then I had a few “just to pay the bills” jobs as well as some MLM “side hustles”. I also ran a blog about being a single WAHM. It was the latter endeavor that led to me becoming a freelance writer (and then on to becoming a copywriter). 

You see? Zigs, zags, and loop de loops galore! 

Some would say that I wasted my education. But I see things differently! 

My background in Sociology and Psychology provided me with a deep understanding of human behavior, a unique perspective on how people absorb information, and the ability to empathize with people from various walks of life. These skills have proven invaluable. Because writing copy isn't just about words; it's about understanding and connecting with your audience on a personal level. 

I realized there's beauty in embracing the unexpected twists and turns in our journeys. My path may have been untraditional, but I wouldn’t change it. It’s all contributed to who I am today. 

The message here is clear: Your experiences shape the person you become. Your unique journey is your greatest asset. It's not about where you started or where you thought you'd be; it's about the skills and perspectives you gain along the way. 

So, embrace your journey. Your unique path, no matter how unconventional, is what makes you extraordinary.
